BIO HERE

Hello reader! My name is Hendrick Kuo. I was born and raised in Taiwan, and I’m currently pursuing my college education at the University of San Francisco.

As a designer, I’m deeply passionate about exploring every opportunity to learn and grow. I specialize in web design, graphic, video editing, typography, illustration and approach each project with curiosity, experimenting with different formats and techniques to bring my ideas to life. My creative process is often guided by emotion and a desire to connect with others, infusing vibrant colors and imaginative elements into my work to spark interaction and inspiration.

I’m on track to graduate in the spring of 2026, and I’m excited to continue evolving as a designer and storyteller.

IMAGEDESCRIPTION DETAILS 01 Garamond poster

For this project, I created a poster inspired by the Garamond typeface, exploring its characteristics through thoughtful design choices. I researched the font’s history and visual traits, then represented them using variations in color, scale, and layered compositions of letters and numbers. Among the three posters I designed, this one gave me the most freedom to experiment with font size, allowing me to push the boundaries of layout and typographic impact.

02 Song Ti poster

For this project, I drew inspiration from my Chinese heritage by incorporating a traditional Chinese font to explore the origins and visual story behind my poster. I delved into the font’s historical background and used it to reflect the cultural context from which it emerged. In ancient times, Chinese script was written vertically from top to bottom and arranged from right to left. I had a great time experimenting with these traditional layouts, playing with different styles and formats to bring that history to life in a modern design.

03 Thorowogood poster

For this project, I chose the Thorowgood font for my poster. Out of the three designs I created, this one stands out as my favorite because of the time, care, and detail I poured into it far more than the other two. While the first two posters were made quickly, this one was a deliberate process. I carefully sketched out exactly what I wanted to appear and committed to the design from start to finish. The oversized letter "Z" dominates the composition, with other fonts scattered around it, adding texture and visual interest. What I’m most proud of is how the layout guides the viewer’s eye across the poster in a smooth, engaging flow, something the other two designs didn’t quite achieve.

04 Books on Trial: Animal Farm

For this project, I contributed to a collection of posters created in class, each representing a book that has been banned across the U.S. I chose Animal Farm by George Orwell. The title and its placement followed a consistent format, using a bold red color to evoke intensity and rebellion. Beyond that, the rest of the design was open to interpretation. I chose a dark blue background to contrast the red and featured one of the book’s iconic quotes. To explain why the book was banned, I added a torn paper effect to the description area, paired with a pig icon—an unmistakable symbol of the story’s central themes. The visual elements work together to reflect the book’s message and controversy in a striking, memorable way.

05 Three icons

This project marked my very first design in the major, and I’m genuinely proud of how I translated my ideas into a set of icons. The theme centered around entertainment in San Francisco, with visual references to the Cherry Blossom Festival, dancing in the Golden Gate park, and Chinese New Year woven into the design. I also included scaled-down versions of the icons to test their clarity and recognizability at smaller sizes. It was my first time using InDesign, and despite the learning curve, I’m really satisfied with how the final result turned out. In fact, it’s become one of my favorite pieces I’ve created so far. Although my grade wasn’t the highest, the time, effort, and creativity I invested made the experience incredibly rewarding.

06 Osamu Tezuka Book Design

For this project, I created a book dedicated to the legendary mangaka Osamu Tezuka, widely regarded as the pioneer of Japanese comic art. Known for iconic works like Astro Boy, Tezuka revolutionized manga with his imaginative storytelling and expressive sketching style. My book explores his creative process, thought patterns, and narrative techniques. Every aspect of my design was inspired by his legacy, it was Tezuka who first sparked my passion for drawing. One of the most enjoyable parts of the project was curating and assembling various manga panels he illustrated into a cohesive spread. Seeing the final design come together was incredibly rewarding, it truly captures what I’m looking for.

07 How To Play Your Friend’s Videogame?

For this project, I created a comedic skit as part of a video assignment, brainstorming funny scenarios and filming with friends—all within a tight two-hour window. We let our creativity run wild, experimenting with different ideas, improvising scenes, and just having a blast goofing around. The process was spontaneous and playful, and it was exciting to see which moments landed and brought the most laughs. :)
